Meet Free Ride Sponsored Rider Madison:

I grew up in Southern California and started riding before I could walk. My parents both rode and my mom was a trainer who had done pretty much every equine discipline, so I did dressage, some eventing, polo, rode reining horses, and showed Andalusians. We would get thoroughbreds off of the track and turn them into polo ponies or jumpers. Eventually I got hooked on show jumping and haven’t looked back! I trained with Mark Watring and Ilan Ferder in California until I went to Kansas State on a riding scholarship.

"I don’t believe horses are “bad” or “problem horses”, I think there is an underlying issue..."

What’s the most important lesson your trainer has taught you?

Patience. Also, that there is usually more to the story when it comes to horses. It’s pretty amazing when we can slow down and really listen to what the horse is trying to tell us. I don’t believe horses are “bad” or “problem horses”, I think there is an underlying issue that the behavior is coming from. As the rider or trainer, we have to set our agenda aside and try to figure out what they are trying to tell us first.

If you didn't ride, what sport or activity do you think you'd do?

I tried to stop riding, it lasted two months. I did take up rock climbing and I really enjoyed that, so probably rock climbing.

Who inspires you to push further, show up more, and to keep striving to the next level?

My husband. He is one of the most supportive figures in my life. He watches film with me, gives me encouragement when I need it, and tough love when I need it too. This isn’t an easy sport for a non-equestrian spouse to be in and his belief in me, makes me want to push further because of the sacrifices he has to make for me to be able to follow my dreams.

What are your Favorite Free Ride Pieces?

I love the Kate Show Shirt. The material is so soft and breathable in the Florida heat. I wear them even when I’m not showing.
